Relay for Life – Volunteers Needed!
The Mississippi Mills Relay for Life will be held on June 8th at Gemmill Park from 5pm to 7am!
Volunteers are still needed in the following areas:
Set up of the event (9am-5pm) Friday
Take down of the event (7am-11am) Saturday
Story reading to children of all ages (6-8pm) Friday on and off
Childrens activities – referee hockey game, help organize face painting schedule, crafts, scrapbooking (5pm-9:30pm) Friday
Photos & videos – take pictures of groups, people, events, How we are going to relay 365, committee and relayers “why I relay.”(throughout the night)
Fight Back zone – educational info, demos, quizzes, help with guest
speakers (5pm-1am)
Band/stage hand (throughout the night)
Activites leaders – badminton, bola ball, red neck olympics, dance
off, fashion shows, camp fires, etc.
Activity announcements (throughout the night)
Welcoming committee (12pm-7pm)
Luminary sales & set up
Survivor’s ceremony, dinner & tent (5pm-8am)
Food organization (throughout the night)
You can volunteer with friends, and you don’t need to volunteer for the entire time that’s listed above! You can pick your hours based on what works for your schedule.

Take Young People Seriously (TYPS)
Almonte’s Youth Centre
Community Liaison Summer Student
Responsibilities:
- Research, plan, deliver, and evaluate community and summer programs, including one community garden event and one fundraiser for TYPS.
- Assist organizing committees, including recruitment and supervision of youth volunteers, for local summer festivals, celebrations, and agricultural events.
- Assist in creating, maintaining, and promoting accessible community gardens and garden.
- Public Relations, including: writing a bi-weekly newspaper article promoting community events, summer programs, youth and the youth centre.
- Other duties as required, including supervision of the youth centre.
- Supervision of youth aged 12-18.
Qualifications:
- Must be 15-30 years old, and a full time student, as per funding requirements. To qualify as a full-time student, you must have been attending school full time for the past school year, and be planning to return to school in September.
- Experience in event planning and facilitation, community involvement, program planning and delivery for youth, supervision of youth.
- Ability to work independently, and as a team.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours as required, including weekends and evenings.
- CPR/First Aid Training
- Driver’s license and access to a vehicle is an asset.
- Current criminal record check.
- Highly motivated and energetic, as this is a fast-paced environment.
Compensation:
- $11.50/hour; 35 hrs/week for 10 weeks
- Application Deadline: May 23rd, 2012
- Start Date: 11 June 2012.

Volunteers Needed – March 31st
Anyone looking for some volunteer hours? The Canadian Cancer Society is looking for some volunteers to help sell daffodils at Patrice’s Grocery Store on Saturday, March 31st. High school students will get volunteer hours for helping out. If you’re interested, talk to the staff at TYPS, or call Amanda at 613-267-1058 before March 9th to sign up. Pairs or small groups of friends who want to sell together are welcome to sign up together.
The Night of Stars
The TYPS Youth Centre Night of Stars is an annual celebration of phenomenal youth from the community, as well as our many supporters who contribute so much to the continuing success of the centre. All members of the community are welcome to join us at TYPS, 65 Mill St. (near the Barley Mow) on Saturday, December 10th from 7-9pm for an evening of entertainment, sweet treats, and the presentation of our annual youth awards! TYPS Youth have also been working on coconut birdfeeders to sell as a fundraiser. They will be available for sale for 2 for $20 at the event, or you can call the centre a 613-256-8485 to place an order.
TYPS Celebrates Local Youth: A Call for Nominations
Do you know a young person between the ages of 12-18 years old from Mississippi Mills that deserves to be recognized for that successful fundraiser they organized, or for speaking out about bullying? Help TYPS Almonte’s Youth Centre recognize youth in the community for exemplary character, community service, creativity, or achievement.
Nominated youth will be publicly awarded at TYPS Youth Centre’s “Night of Stars” on December 10th from 7-9pm. The entire community is invited to celebrate local youth, enjoy music performed by local youth, and enjoy some tasty treats.
If you would like to nominate a young person you know, call TYPS at 613-256-8485 or email Rachel@typsyouthcentre.org. Nominations must include your name and contact information, the nominee’s name, age, phone number and the reason why this individual deserves to be celebrated.
The deadline for nominations is December 2nd at 5pm.

TYPS Youth Centre Annual Silent Auction!
It’s that time of year again, the TYPS Youth Centre Silent Auction is soon to be underway! Bidding opens on Friday, September 16th, with bids being taken at The Night is Young concert at the Almonte Old Town Hall from 6:30pm-8:30pm, and then continuing at TYPS from 8:30pm-10pm (with refreshments being served!) Bidding will remain open until 11:59 pm on Friday, September 23rd.
