Take one minute and fill out this short survey on injury prevention!

Yes, indeed, we are living in a ‘Jackass Generation’, setting ourselves on fire and attempting to jump over oncoming cars to capture it all on video!

Currently the Health Promoter is conducting a research study to gain information on youth injury in Lanark county. When, where, why and how are you getting hurt?

Please click on the link below and take 1 minute and fill out this very important questionnaire, your responses will help determine what messages are the highest priority for you, the youth!

Opportunities to get involved with Youth Policy!

Youth Dialogue Strategy

· The Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) is looking to hear from youth (aged 12-25) on what supports and opportunities help guide positive youth development.

· To do this, MCYS is launching its Youth Dialogue Strategy, a multi-faceted approach designed to give youth across the province an opportunity to help shape the Youth Policy Framework.

· To support this process, the ministry has launched the website “Where’s Your Voice At?” (www.youthconnect.ca/ypf).

· The website provides full details on how young people can participate in the youth dialogues through:

§ Face-to-face dialogues – The 12 face-to-face sessions consist of a six-hour interactive workshop where youth will have an opportunity to learn about policy and decision making, and answer a set of questions through a variety of activities.  The sessions will occur in communities across the province, with at least one in each of the nine MCYS Service Delivery Division regions.  Registration is limited and on a first come, first served basis.  Youth can register at www.youthconnect.ca/ypf.

§ Confidential survey – The ministry will host the same set of questions through a confidential survey at www.youthconnect.ca/ypf. The survey provides an opportunity to answer as many, or as few, of the questions as participants want.

§ Online dialogue session – The online dialogue session will be led by members of the Youth Development Committee (see below for details on the committee).  This will be an opportunity for participants to answer the same questions from the face-to-face sessions.  The date and time for the interactive session is listed on the website www.youthconnect.ca/ypf.

§ Workshop in a Box – This is a resource for youth and adult allies to run their own youth dialogue session.  The Workshop in a Box explains how each workshop will be run and organized, how to facilitate meaningful discussion, the questions to be asked, and necessary background information.

The full Workshop in a Box takes approximately six hours to run.  Understanding that this is a significant time commitment, we have broken down the workshop into smaller components.  This allows facilitators to do only one or two activities, pick and choose certain topics of interest, or run the full six-hour workshop.  For example, if less time is available, participants can complete some of the activities or just answer the dialogue questions.

The workshop also includes participant workbooks.  Details on how the workbooks can be submitted to the ministry can be found online.  The Workshop in a Box, and its smaller components, are available for download at www.youthconnect.ca/ypf.

Youth Development Committee

· Last fall, the ministry launched its recruitment for the Youth Development Committee (YDC).  The ministry received over 400 applications from youth between the ages of 18-25 from across the province.

· In January of this year, 25 youth representing diverse backgrounds and experiences and a broad geographical representation were selected.

· The YDC has been working with the ministry to design and deliver strategies aimed at engaging youth in this project.

· Members of the YDC will be co-facilitating the face-to-face dialogues and the online dialogue session happening on www.youthconnect.ca/ypf.

Youth Policy Framework

· The Youth Policy Framework will serve as a resource for parents, communities and decision makers that describes the developmental stages between ages 12-25 and what kinds of supports and opportunities promote healthy development.

· A Youth Policy Framework will help us all to better understand what young people need as they grow and develop so that we are best equipped to support them to reach their full potential

WANTED: 3 Youth Research Assistants!

The Health Promoter at TYPS Youth Centre is currently seeking 3 highly motivated youth to work as research assistants and, using the local high school as a research site, launch a research project to find out about local youth’s experiences of injury and injury prevention.

The qualified candidates will facilitate 4 focus groups at the local high school to determine what messages are the highest priorities for the local youth population. Once the core injury prevention messages are identified, the research team will then create products to carry the core messages (buttons, t-shirts, etc.) and present the results to all local schools, municipal council and at community events.

The lucky candidates will earn volunteer hours as well as $100 cash bonus upon completion of project. Project commitment would be approx. 5 hours a week for 4-6weeks.

Training provided!

Please contact Jaime at TYPS youth centre for further details, (613)256-8485 or email jaime@typsyouthcentre.org
